This long, slender box is made with bone panels set together in a fine mosaic pattern and hand-painted in black. The lid has a central floral panel with lotus-style blooms and delicately cross-hatched petals, framed by a bold zigzag border. The sides carry flowing vine-and-leaf scrollwork between ruled lines, and a small round bone-coloured knob opens the lid.
It works well for pens, jewellery, cutlery, letters or small desk items, and looks just as good displayed on a console, dresser or shelf. Each piece is painted by hand, so small variations in brushwork, tone and bone seams are part of its character.
